The 1913 Armory Show at The Art Institute of Chicago

Did you know that the Art Institute of Chicago was the first art museum in the United States to exhibit the work of European modernists? 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of this landmark exhibition—known as the Armory Show. The Art Institute has a cool, new interactive space on their website dedicated to the 1913 Armory Show that allows you to walk through this historic show.

The Art Institute of Chicago enjoys the unique distinction of having been the only art museum to host the Armory Show during its tour of the United States. As such, it was also the first museum to exhibit the works of modern artists including Constantin BrĂ¢ncusi, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. This site explores the organization, presentation, reception, and impact of the Armory Show in Chicago and celebrates the city's important place in the early history of modern art in America.

A not so minor correction,

The Armory Show bears its name because it was first exhibited in New York City, at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue, between East 25th and East 26th St. This happened in the beginning of 1913 (Feb-March). The show was such a huge success that it later traveled to Chicago and to the Copely Society of Art in Boston. However, whereas the first show, which was huge, included a lot of American art, only the European art travelled on to subsequent venues, which were smaller.
This comment does not intend in any way to take away from Chicago's importance in modern art. But facts are facts.

You can take a virtual tour of the original Armory show at the following link (with which I have no affiliation)

Thank you for reading my blog! Actually, this blog post does not require any correction. It does not in any way state that The Art Institute of Chicago was the originator of The Amory Show. I have published three other blog posts about The Armory Show which are very clear about the historical significance of the Show and its opening in New York City, with some interesting and fun facts.
